July 2012 -- Day Six

We did our training walks in a somewhat busy environment. Lots of traffic and it was all new to Mollie so it was quite enough to keep her brain on overdrive. Before we started moving much, I spent some time getting her attention. We walked back and forth every time she got ahead of me and then we would stop and just work on attention. After about 5 minutes, the little light bulb went on and she checked in with me. As soon as that happened, we could walk a farther distance and she was walking perfectly beside me and coming to a sit when I stopped. Based on how the training session started, I thought it would be a short training session or move to an area with not as many distractions but with a little bit of patience and waiting her out, we were able to work well at that level of distraction.

Helping her to be more tuned into her people doesn't squash the Mollie we know and love. She is still her sweet little spunky self, she's just more tuned in and waits for more direction from her people.

And while we are working hard to not squish her personality, she's working hard to squish this puppy.

She just can't figure out why this puppy won't wake up and play with her some more.

Eventually she gives up and rests herself. It's a good thing, too, because this girl has been playing long and hard. It's a wonder she can still hold her head up.

Even though she's a popular girl and everyone loves and she gets a lot of exercise when playing with the other dogs...

She still needs to play a lot with humans. This will help some with her distractability too. See? Humans can be just as fun as playing with the other dogs. She did need a little refresher on her "drop" so we could continue to play. Everyone needs a little refresher every once and a while and, the nice thing is, it comes back so much faster the second time around.

Just checking in...
